These are my personal recommendations. Note that if I recommend it, I like it very much.
Gentoo - In short, Gentoo is a Linux Distro for nerds, people with passion (and time) for going deep. Super flexible, you can enable/disable what you want at package level easily. You can use testing versions only for some packages or at system level, and have a lean system like no other distro. If you want to learn more, please see the post Why Gentoo.
But if you're into Linux and don't have this much passion, I mean, time, you can opt for a binary-based Distro. Between many options, I recommend Debian using the Sid channel. Having it well configured it can give you an updated system, recent kernel, and quite stable packages.
